Vastu Myths
What is Vastu! It is sanskrit ‘for the location where we stay’. When Vastushastra came into being there were no municipalities, village development administration and construction by-laws. Vastu states, logically sufficient, that the kitchen in a house should be in leeward main heading for the easy cause that the wind would take away kitchen smoke rather than of dispersing it interior the dwelling. There were no consume followers then, nor chimneys. The erstwhile wisdom is now put to absurd understanding by today’s Vastu pundits to suggest factories where to put the boiler room. Kitchen had agni (fire) and so do boilers, they believe, so these pundits advise you on the location of the boiler in your factory. I understand of numerous cases e.g. Bharat Forge who re-designed their vegetation according to Vastu at great cost, but display me one sloka where any manufacturer is cited in Vastushastra. They are not cited because there were no manufacturers then. We should decide what part of Vastu should be utilised in the altered attenuating factors of today, when, for instance we have smokeless fuels and the kitchen need not be according to the wind direction.

According to Vastushastra, an establishment with an entry from the south is inauspicious and doom is assured. But half the stores on financial roads have south entries. Are they condemned en masse? The White House in WashingtonDC has a doorway opposite south. It farther defies Vastu in that it has a door in the middle of a wall. But it has had leaders of the United States and is the house of the head of the large-scale super power in the world.
Doors and windows in those days had to be in a directly line for traverse ventilation and the directly pattern was to help the women of those days who utilised to stay shyly in the interiors and required the facility to talk from far with in the dwelling. One treatise says that the west should have shady trees. It was a widespread sense direction to slash the sun in that particular district. But this is not a necessity in north India. In the south, we get the sunrays from the north. All Vastu publications were region specific, but they were applied in discriminatory nowadays from Delhi to Kanyakumari. One Vastu edict is that Brahmins should have no dwellings at all. That may have been befitting sociologically at that time, but are we blindly follow such instructions.
What the Vastu Shastries of today do not reveal (and numerous may not themselves understand) is that the ancient research going out with back many centuries had many versions. In essence there were numerous Vastushastra because there were many authors, e.g. Varahamihira, Bhrigu, Manusara, Mayamata. Each had his own treatise, his own interpretations and had taken into consideration his own districts position, weather , social norms, components of his time and his ethnicity. Caves, huts and dwellings were constructed in those days, using diverse components accessible then and so a lot of what they composed made flawless sense. If traverse ventilation had to be accomplished, doors and windows would have to be assembled in certain main heading. Cross ventilation can however, be conceived by artificial means now a days and if air conditioning is resorted to, it is a non-issue.
If water reserves are to the west, they bring awful luck, according to one Vastu treatise. Did Mumbai with the Arabian Sea to the west, become the commercial capital of India due to awful luck? More than a quarter of India’s commercial turn over is ascribed to this town. A quarter of our government’s profits come from this metropolis. Is this bad luck? although, Vastu pandits of today utilised their ingenuity and state that Mumbai is on reclaimed land, so the rules do not request. It is another issue that not all of Mumbai is on reclaimed land.
Or let us look at annals in out components. The famed Maratha rulers, the Peshwas, had north-facing doors to ensure riches and joyfulness. And in Pune at an locality called Shaniwar Wada, the Peshwas had a huge north opposite entry. Vastu did not anything to ward off the Peshwas bankruptcy and misfortunes. In those days there was not drainage. And so, according to Vastu the bathroom was presumed to be far from the well. It would avert sewage from going into the wells. But these days not only is there drainage, there are drastic alterations in conditions. In a ten-storey structure of modern times the overhead tank, today’s well, is up above. So should the inhabitants of the tenth floor be granted a lavatory far away, on the ground floor? In that multistory luxury suite dwelling only one flat would be north facing. So are the other three apartments on every lone floor condemned?
If we do not use some widespread sense we arrive up with some hilarious bits. One Vastu treatise states that only to the east raging torrent rivers bring prosperity and this was probably true in the district for which it was in writing. We have Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, which do not have to the east raging torrent rivers, and they are prosperous states.
It is said that the temple at Tirupati is wealthy because of Vastu, others are not so because of Vastu. Even Gods arrive into the clutches of Vastu! If you go in from the east you will know-how peace but if you go in from the west you will not. But so numerous temples are Sarvobhadra (entry from numerous directions). Would we then know-how both peace and the opposite?
But why is there such an upsurge of Vastu nowadays, one may ask. This is a cultural and sociological inquiry. The cause may be fourfold; Vastu is a convenient peg upon which to suspend one’s flops. There are a allotment of people who get wealthy overnight, but approach Vastu pandit for atonement ….. to bribe the gods, as it were. The blind faith to which we in India are prone often takes epidemic proportions. It is easily a latest trend – a minister goes to a Vastu pandit so, like sheep numerous pursue him.
The miserable part is that Vastu pandits are today large threats to architectural perform. Fifty distinct topics are revised and the climax of information gained over a five year time span is put to nil by the Vastu pandits, most of whom don’t understand the distinction between column, lintel, beam. And yet, they advised what should be finished to whole organisations, even townships. I have had bright architecture graduate who are my students. They arrive almost crying to me saying that their practices are often endangered. After designs are carefully made, sanctioned by the administration and so on, the client brings a Vastu pandit, who dictate alterations that would make the structure gaze awful and architecturally unsound. Reworking has become progressively frequent and not in the best interest of the client.
You may recall the occurrence of Deve Gawda being notified that since his structure made him go up only two steps, he would not last his full period. Since the building in inquiry was currently entire, the architect used his ingenuity, made an indent on the floor and injected paper-thin tiles that were embedded at the ground grade. Voila! That was the third step and all were joyous. That the third did not bring about a full term is well renowned. NT Rama Rao was advised that he should have ‘X’ meters of clear route from the north. His secretariat had slums in the north, so all land there was came by at the total cost of crores of rupees. The shantytown structures thereon were then demolished and a northern entry was established for him. But he was soon taken from head Ministership, and seven months then, he past away. expending astronomical allowance on Vastu correction did not assisted. The Central Public Works agencies adjust anecdotes to match the whims and fancies of mighty politicians, who regularly go over allowance. The public should become aware and public interest litigation should be filed to turn around this this tendency of misuse of taxpayer’s cash.
Unfortunately, there are no statutes to govern Vastu shastries. Their misdeeds should arrive under purview of the buyer defence proceed. The print media, TV and others should come more attentive and give no fillip to function to respect their kind in paraspara prashamsa (mutual esteem) where Vastu shastries bestow upon each other adorned titles like Vastu samrat, Vastu pravin, Vastu shiromani. The initial Vastu publications themselves state that if quacks perform this research, they should be executed. Vastu pandits should be asked about this provision.
Christopher Wren had constructed a place of worship that had no interim columns. There was fear conveyed that the place of worship would fail, whereas the famed architect assured that not anything would occur for a century years. Under force, a column was eventually put in location to allay public doubts. The interim pillar was put, but it was deliberately six inches short of the top covering. It supports not anything… It’s a psychological prop!
